So, I think it’s fair to say that for the past year Charlotte and I have been struggling. Our writing was suffering and more importantly so were our characters. Not for any particular reason, mainly because we weren’t realising what we were doing to our writing but also because of various things going on in our lives. Mainly work … for both of us, our work lives have been kicking our butts in a demanding and draining way, which has meant that our creativity was on the down and we’d got stuck in a rut.
We’re used to these rut’s where we repeat the same things over and over and over again. It’s something that we’ve come to terms with that actually we’re good at it – as will anyone who has read our blogs realise as well! But with some time off over Christmas in particular, we’ve both been able to recalibrate, reevaluate and actually … start afresh.
Since Christmas, we’ve found our love of writing again. We’ve found our characters again, and what’s more … we have our plot and our story and all of our characters back on track. We’ve brought back some of our old characters that we had scrapped because of “reasons” that neither of us remember, and have been sitting here scratching our heads trying to figure it out.
The long and short of it is, we needed the break. We needed the time out and to take a step back from our writing and our world and to come back refreshed and energised.
We aren’t there by any stretch of the imagination, but we’re making progress. Little by little, we’re getting back characters that we had managed to destroy through our ideas that we knew best – not realising that these characters, no matter how much we want to protect them, need the pain and the heartache in their lives.
For us, we know that our characters know best; but we don’t always listen to it. Hopefully, this time we’ve learned that lesson and with luck we will carry on moving forwards in the way that we are now.
It’s a familiar story, and a familiar hope I know but this time … this time we’re determined!
So this year, it’s onwards and upwards! We’ve actually started working on our main plot, we have an outline and we have 3D characters. We have our heroes and we have our villains and for the first time in a long time we both believe that we can do this …
Today, we’re doing house keeping – the perfect thing to do with a storm rolling in for both of us! So, it’s job sorting, age sorting and all of those things that we keep saying “we’ll do …” and then never actually buckle down and get done. Either way, we’re making progress and I think both of us are seriously chuffed about it!
